Let Me Tell You a Story
About How Our Libraries Came to Be
Many years ago, twenty two to be exact, I wandered into the upstairs of a new library that had just taken all of the old library's books and paper files and placed them in cardboard boxes on the second floor underneath some long fold-up tables. They were way back in the corner and covered with newspapers, old envelopes and dust until one day, just before Halloween, I was assigned to find a story about rumored ghosts in our town's past.
I wanted to tell the story in a way that had not been told before. I wanted to go through the old letters in those boxes to find clues and to see what the ancestors had to say. It was a real eye opener. Stuff from the late 1800's and early turn of the last century. Letter's that told the tale of addresses, events and surnames.
Something to think about, right? Don't just tell any old story, find one and piece it together with scotch tape and midnight oil.
So, okay, how does this all figure in? Well, some of the stories that started are here, in these libraries. But what about the rest, how did they get here? Well, I got lucky, readers like you began to send in their own. Makes the hair on my neck stand up just to think about it. And, oh, my hair was brown then. Today, it is white. Very, very white.
Enjoy the site. I hold the curtain open and welcome you in.
